通訳者からのアドバイス:英語でのプレゼンを上達させる10の簡単な秘訣

1.       まず最も大切なことは、絶対に決してどんなことがあっても、「早口にならないこと」。これを守れれば、あなたのプレゼンは90%成功したも同然です。

 

2.       1さえクリアできれば細かい文法の間違いは気にしなくても大丈夫です。三単現のSくらい抜かしてもちゃんと聴衆に意味は伝わります。おおらかに構えましょう。

 

3.       しかし、発音面で間違うと聞く側の混乱を招く音があります。LRです。日本語のラ行はLRの中間くらいの音です。ですので、少なくとも、Lのときは舌先を口の中の上の方(上の歯茎の根元あたり)に当ててください。そして逆にRのときは舌先が口の中のどこにも触れないようにしてください。これを実践するだけでもLRの差がはっきりします。

 

4.       文と文の間は少なくとも0.25秒くらいは間をあけましょう。息もつかずに話し続けると「焦っている」印象を与えてしまいます。

 

5.       そして、重要なことを言ったあとは思い切って1.5~2秒くらい間を開けてください。2秒は意外と長いです。間をあけることで、「ここが重要です」という意図が聴衆に伝わりますし、聴衆の頭に残りやすくなります。

 

6.       このとき、勇気を持って聴衆をグルっと見回すと更に効果的です。

 

7.       スライドの1ページに目一杯文字を詰め込んではいけません。

 

8.       もし事前に時間があれば、英語の堪能な人に練習台になってもらって、聞き取りにくいところ、分りにくいところがないかチェックしてもらいましょう。

 

9.       ただし、今回の英語でのプレゼンの意義が「慣れない英語で頑張って英語でプレゼンをすること」のみなのであれば、上記の注意は全て忘れてしまって大丈夫です。

 

 

10.    しかしそのプレゼンの内容を確実に聴衆に伝えることがとても重要なのであれば、優秀な通訳者を雇ってください。そして上記14~6を日本語でも実践していただけると通訳の質もグンと上がります。ありがとうございます!

10 simple tips for making your presentations stick better in your audience’s minds

As a conference interpreter, I get to hear a fair number of presentations done in English by non-native speakers as most international conferences are conducted in English regardless of the language of the host nation. And I often feel sure that NO ONE would remember a word the presenter said even when the content itself was good. So, I compiled a list of 10 simple ways to make your audience listen to you and remember the brilliant things you said.

1.       First and foremost, do not speak fast under any circumstances whatsoever. The audience might hear some sound coming out of your mouth, but no word will be registered in their heads. As long as you can restrain yourself from speaking fast, I’d say your presentation is already 90% successful. If you have many points to make but the time given is limited, be selective and say the most important things slowly and clearly. Making 5 points and being remembered is much better than making 10 points and being forgotten.

 

2.       Do not worry about small grammatical mistakes. It’s not an English exam. The audience know you are not a native English speaker and most of them are likely to be non-native speakers as well. As long as you stick to the tip 1 above, your message will get across.

 

3.       On the other hand, it goes a long way to pay a little attention to your pronunciation,  particularly where there is a significant difference between your native language and English. A good example would the pronunciation (or not) of the letter “h” in French. So, my name should be “Hiromi” and not “Iromi”.

 

4.       Try to pause at least a quarter of a second between sentences. If you forget to breathe between sentences, you give an impression that you are nervous.

 

5.       And after you have said something very important, be brave and pause for between 1.5 and 2 seconds. 2 seconds feels like a quite long but do not be afraid. This way, the audience will understand it is important and they will remember it better.

 

6.       Better still, in that 2 seconds, look around the auditorium confidently.

 

7.       Do not cram in too many sentences and words in to one slide. No one will read a busy slide.

 

8.       If you have time beforehand, ask someone who is fluent in English to listen to your presentation and give you feedback.

 

9.       Having listed all these tips, you can ignore all of them if the sole purpose of your presentation is to be seen to be giving a presentation in English, which is actually sometimes the case.

 

 

10.    However, if you are presenting something you seriously wish to convey to the audience, then it is a very good idea indeed to hire a good interpreter.
